My brother-in-law traded in his Nissan R35 GT-R for a gen-1 Audi R8 V10 last fall. As the guy in the family with the camera and some experience taking pictures of cars, it naturally fell to me to provide some coverage of his new pride-and-joy.

However, I did not want to just stand around a parking lot. Thus, in early May, I wrangled both our families to go on a weekend trip to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to drive the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and then spend the second day in !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Since I have done this trip quite a few times already, I concentrated on taking pictures of his car. Here they are!

2nd and final fuel stop, just before the ferry for home (Greater Vancouver recently broke the record for the most expensive gasoline price ever in North America, topping out at over $1.62CAD+ / L or $6USD+ / gal, due to one of the highest rate of carbon-related taxes in US and Canada... so I always top up before coming home):

I fell in love with the R8 only when I finally saw one in person. Before that it had always seemed boring. I. Person it's a very different story, especially with the v10 engine. That sound! Best sounding car I've ever heard.

His is a 2011 w/ ~15k km and he got it for between $100k -> $110k CAD . I hear that with 6MT then add $10k - $20k CAD.

Now that’s a nice road tripping pair.  I really like those R8s. But with the family and all, it’s a tough sell.  So I have the next best thing...  and I can haul five in comfort and V10 wail to boot.  Maybe someday.

Yeah, my sister’s kid and his grandma had to ride in my “family sedan” :-P and of course I like mine better... I was offered a stint to switch cars , and I declined :-) If he got the gated 6MT I would have taken him up on it, but R-Tronic = meh.

Also, mine is of course 6MT, so I only trust myself with it :-P

S8? Or RS6?

Yeah the automatic isn’t as engaging. I’d still drive it, but not if I had to turn over the caddy keys.   Mine is the S8. Depreciation has been hard on these. Which is good for me.  I still miss my first gen V too.  That car was a blast, but not nearly as refined as the second gen like yours.  No replacement for rowing your own gears.

Coming from 5x BMWs and still a member of the BMW Car Club of BC, I would be remiss if I didn’t guess E60 M5 for “V10, Seats 5" :-P but I can see from your avatar picture that you’ve got an Audi....

Good guess though. I wanted the M5 too, but lack of AWD scratched that one off the list. If I didn’t want the AWD, I’d have stuck with the Vs. still love those cars. But after 3 winters with my Gen 1 V, I wasn’t interested anymore in a RWD car for four seasons driving. Even on winters, that thing was unpleasant when the weather got dicey. So I started on the path of Audi AWD and 6speed with the S4 and was hooked. Then it was all about the S8 with the V10 mill. Really can’t go wrong with any of these cars. The caddy, the BMW or the Audi’s. All are very nice rides. I do wish there was a manual option for the S8, but I don’t miss it as much as I thought I would.

I’ll probbaly end up with an early Z06 or another Gen 1 V for a track rat once my boys are older and want to play with cars with me.  But the S8 works for now.
